The Water Moccasin was probably one of the most used Cobra toys that I had as child and as such was destined to be in my JoeVerse. There were some major flaws with the original design that defied logic and I had to fix them. The first flaw that I wanted to change was the little double barreled machine gun attached to the gunners tub. It had no ammunition source and was grotesquely undersized. I was looking for a machine gun that I could use, as a standard for Cobra, the one that came with Tunnel Rat was perfect, minus the scope. I then moved on too the second flaw. The two 44mm lateral “Destructor” cannons. These cannons would be very ineffective because they could only fire in the direction that the Water Moccasin was facing and they had no elevation capabilities. I opted to replace these cannons with two torpedoes. These could be fired and then the Water Moccasin could quickly veer off in another direction. Something still was not right. I began to look at the propeller for the air-boat portion. I have heard an air-boat and they are not quiet. I pictured the Water Moccasin as a stealthy watercraft and not an attack boat. I removed the propeller and replaced it with a two water jet pumps. I also did not like the fact that when you placed figures on the side decks that there was nothing for them to hold on to. I added the back deck and the handlebars to remedy that. I did like the idea of the original “Remote Guided Gator Torpedo”. I liked the idea that this was probably used when the Water Moccasin was being chased as a means to destroy their pursuers. I decided to use a naval mine. I liked the original color scheme and tried to match it as closely as possible. I also added the two antennae because they just looked cool to me. The glass was painted black to give it a tinted appearance. This is basically an improved Water Moccasin, but I did not want to call it a Water Moccasin Mark II, so I decided to change the name completely. I wanted it to be similar, so it became the cottonmouth another name for the same snake also known as the water moccasin. I am very pleased with this custom and I finally have a Water Moccasin that may not be heard before it is seen.
