So, I've gotten onto a playset kick lately thanks to the sweet Warhammer
Temple of Skulls piece I used to spur myself to make my Elric fig.
I've had ideas for some playset bashes of random other actual playsets
for a goodly while now, but now that I've actually tanken the foamboard-
and-papier mache plunge, I'm actually working on them.
This is a bad guy playset, the Secret Lair. I'm not gonna say whose lair it
supposed to be, but the keen-eyed amongst you may be able to see a
female fig in the top level of the Doom Tower and be able to guess an
affiliation based on her.
This is intended to be a secret rocket base built into an old Arabic
treasure cache in Libya or Tunisia, with the Arab-era traps and pitfalls
leading into the interior still in use by the current occupants.
This first pic shows the outside of the mountain. There'll be some added
peaks built up on the outside of the Hoth Attack Base, so the pathway
leading to the Alamut Gate will be in a steep gully, with maybe some
boulders that can roll down to crush the infidels. I'll papier mache the
Mustafar volcano and the HAB together into one rock structure, with more
going up over the top of Doom's Tower to enclose it (from this side, at
least).
This second pic is a cut-away interior shot of the entranceway after
crossing thru the Tower and being security-cleared. I'm not sure what I'll
have in the white area at bottom right, but it'll likely have a rock wall on
the outer right, with the left half open for access to the rocket launch
facility.
This third pic shows the last Arabic security measure, the trap door (from
the crummy COBRA Mountain set). As this is just the top level, in the
lower level will be a spike pit with at least the body of Montezuma (whose
wearing Roman garb for some reason).
This pic shows the bottom level directly below the above pic. To the left is
the Hulk flick cryotube. It's so big that I've only got room for one here,
which is convenient as I only have one to use. I'll just have to mod my
story a teeny bit, so it's all good. To the right is the backside of the
power unit, part of some plumbing turd-drainage flue or whatever. I want
to get one of them sidetable nightlights with the rotating sleeves inside so
that the colors showing on the front side will look all cool, and shit. The
middle area will be the spike pit enclosed in rock, separate from the rest
of the Lair's interior.
This is the other side of the lower level, showing a couple of 'interrogation'
devices, the front side of the power unit and its control panel, the two red
blast doors that the wind kept blasting down, the rocket gantry (the rocket
is unavailable for pics as it's currently receiving maintenance to become a
2-stage rocket), and the elevator from the security-clearance area above
to the rocket facility below.
And now pics of it all put on top of iself. The bottom level should be
entirely enclosed by rock, excepting maybe the corner with the rocket
launcher, which should be able to roll back and forth as the rocket needs
to be worked on and when it's ready to launch out the volcano mouth.
I'm torn about how to make the lower level accessible to play if I encircle
it with rock, however. Do I make removeable papier mache panels or do
I make the entire top level removeable?
Anyone got any tips or tricks I should use from this point? I'm gonna
print out some deckplating stickers (using blank FedEx labels from work,
so they're free!) for the security clearance area and the entire lower
level. I need to do that first before building up the rock walls as it'll be
too much of a bitch to try to cut the stickers to the contours of the rocks,
right? Then I just cover them with newsprint to prevent them being
spraypainted when I paint the walls, right?
