I started working on a final battle whiplash armor.... thought I'd share my progress. the large work is done, just have little stuff to work on. I'm going to re-sculpt his hair up in the little pony-tail as per the movie... and because I had to trim off the lower part of the hair to make it fit into the neck space on the drone... I'm going to add some greeblies to the arms and back to bring it closer to the movie... I've got to construct and attach the "skirt" of armor.. I counted at least 5 parts to it in the film. There is a long cod-piece, two pieces that hang in front of the thighs and then two more that hang behind his ass. I've yet to figure out how I'll make these, probably out of glued together pieces of styrene. then the entire thing needs to be repainted so that it matches. I plan on base-coating it with grey primer and probably going with a dark grey and gunmettal paint scheme. It is dificult to tell in the movie what the armor's colors were but from what I could tell it was an unpainted, dark silver or gunmetal look with the mechanical bits still in silver.... what do you guys think? coming together nicely or no? What about the fine details, see anything I missed that I didn't mention already? any ideas for an alternative helmet head? I realy don't want to sculpt one from scratch... but I might try....

Looks good man, interested in seeing the final product. You could always use the production one for a helmeted head when it comes out.

Look into the wide variety of 1/100 or 1/144th Gundam figs for the skirt before free-bashing one together. Search for stuff related to the bad guy 'Char Aznable'. His Gundams were all pink, but his models had the fuller longer skirts more similar to Vanko's than the good guy Gundams had, iirc.

I looked up the "Final Battle Whiplash" and the pics are cool but it's NOT the Whiplash we saw in the movie AT ALL. He's drastically different. Very cool but different. You can see pics here: www.toywiz.com/comicwhiplash.html

that first one thats in the link is so drastically different because it's based on the comic series...
that second one is obviously the one from the movie, and yet he's STILL incorrect. I guess they figured he wasn't in the movie long enough, or hasbro didn't get the movie's specs for the suit to make it correct?
the basic look is all there but I looked very closely at the movie, frame by frame (I'll put up some stills soon) and there are several things I noticed about the armor that isn't easilly discernable at first glance:
- the helmet look like a sloppily welded together piece that looks more like the drone's heads - the whips are held in his HANDS just like his original suit, NOT coming out from under his wrists - there is a spool or wheel on the back of the shoulders that winds up each whip (this is actually zoomed in on in the movie and a key feature of the modified suit) - His feet are built like the army drones' feet with the flip down stabilizing pads, you see him use these to pin down WM in the movie...
It looks to me like hasbro got lazy and is just going to be doing a strait re-paint of the ground assault armor (it even includes the short chain saw attachment there between his legs) with a new head sculpt.

YESSSSS.......... as you can see from the above 3 images the whip does indeed come out from below the wrist but it then bends up through his fists and he holds it like a true whip, just like his originals in the movie. here is that circular "spool" as I called it winding up the excess whip when he grabs WM and pulls him back towards himself. In this one you can clearly see the individual pieces of the "skirt" AND that the fore-arm pieces are not NEARLY as bulky as on the actual drones. They are much smaller and less built up. now the helmet is obviously NOTHING like the production version here, it looks like a welded together drone's head with eye holes to me... and last but not least is the foot details: you can clearly see the two flip down stabilizers on the foot grabbing onto War Machine in this frame... so.... I'm sure hasbro's would have passed the initial "thats pretty awesome" impressions test, but once you start realy looking at it there is ALOT going on here that they just didn't come close to covering.

Damn thanks for those, I hadn't remembered seeing that figure. Looks cool but as Spuds pointed it out's not "Movie accurate." But hey, that's why we customize.

I dunno, Marcus. I don't recall that 'Ow, my back!' test model having whips. Its more likely that Hasbro built this fig off the preproduction artwork and then the CGI model was changed after they were too far along alter the fig. We all know this stuff happens *all* the time.

I have a feeling this is also what happened, then hasbro just altered the name of the fig so people wouldn't get upset at it not being accurate! marcus, do you mean the drones lined up in hammer's facility right before vanko rips the head off the one? I'll try and get some shots of those.

Cheers mate. BTW - Jimbo - I think that stuff only happens with shit toy companies like Playmates. Besides, the drones weren't shown until months after the film was released, so given the timescale, they would have had plenty of time to get it right. It only takes 6 months to get a figure out for release from start to finish these days.

ok... so you think the "power armor" drone figure seen with the silver and grey armor, with the 4 eyed helmet is the "OW, my back" armor shown in the courtroom scenes? that makes alot more sense...

The helmet head from the film is so much better looking than the drone heads. I wish they would have come with something like that as an alternate head.

I think as a suit your right... but I like the drone heads myself. They drive the point home that the machine is just that, there is noone in it. I think they would cease to be "drones" and become "remote controlled suits" if you had a wearable helmet on there...

Cool pics, Spud. That clears it up.
Also saw at JC a pic from the Hasbro slideshow that states it's a Drone.
And still some people there are saying it's not.
Dumb fucks.

I think its Whiplash.
Final Battle Whiplash is supposed to be in that wave and there are no other figures visible. I believe it was labeled Whiplash in the SDCC pics, BTW.

Spud, does Whiplash have one spool for both whips or one on each shoulder? Also, you suck, I'm now making my own.
